The rest of the group had a sleep in and slow start. The sickies are doing better but not completely well yet. Kelli was feeling good enough to participate in a day of retail therapy and has been eating some. Conor elected to mostly spend the day at the hotel (skypeing Laura in Spain)....hmmmm maybe he wasn't really that sick after all. Everyone except Conor made it to the market and was proudly displaying their purchases this afternoon. Late this afternoon we took a daytrip to nearby Santa Maria de Jesus. The afternoon school was in full swing and the children loved meeting and playing with the huge Americans. The school there is in pretty good shape and the kitchen that our group rebuilt several years ago is in perfect working order...thank you Terry Walsh! We met with the principal and a lady from the food company that delivers to the school to review and work out details on a nutrition program for the children.
We drove to the large stone cross high on the hillside overlooking Antigua and managed to get in a few photos before the rains came in earnest. Now we are hanging out at Casa del las Fuentes trying to decide what to do for dinner. I think we'll walk to the ever popular Frida's if the rain lets up a little.
We have decided to go to Panajachel/ Lake Atitlan tomorrow and will travel in one microbus right after breakfast at the hotel. It is about 2 hours north on the Pan American highway. We pass through some gorgeous countryside with lots of little men in woven red pants walking the roads with hoes and machetes in hand. We hope to do some swimming in the hot springs in the lake.
Well everyone is doing well and we will all enjoy dinner together tonight. Dan wants his mother to now that his bowels are back to normal. Michelle says to tell her parents she is going strong! Annika is looking for a volleyball tournament and Bailey seems to have forgotten about spiders once the shopping started. Nate and the other college kids minus Conor found a great restaurant for lunch and Nate was apparently an awesome shopper. Todd and Roger had breakfast at Fernando's and then wandered a bit on their own. Miranda, Maggie and Kelli criss crossed Antigua shopping very seriously.
After getting Melanie off this morning I enjoyed the early Mass at St Francis of Assisi church then worked out some final trip details with Conor before doing laundry and going for a run.
The rain has slowed to a trickle so we are off to Frida's for dinner. Bye.
Thanks to eveyone for providing a great opportunity for Melanie to help out the people of Guatemala. She had a great time and was proud of what was accomplished. We talked at length about the experieince and her stories. Thanks again!
